Tariff Actions

Tariffs are imposed through two kinds of presidential document, and this page carries both. Executive orders cover the emergency-powers tariffs; proclamations cover the metals actions taken under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act. Listing only one kind would leave out most of the record. Titles link to the full official text in the Federal Register.

The Federal Register does not tag presidential documents by subject, so there is no official tariff flag to defer to. We select documents whose titles carry unambiguous trade meaning — among them tariff, adjusting imports, imposing duties and Section 232. Phrases rather than single words, so that an order about the duties of an office is not swept in. A tariff action whose title avoids all of these would be missed; if you spot one, tell us and we will widen the list.
